How to Descale a Shower Head Without Damaging the Finish

November 03, 2026

A shower can look clean and still have a weak spray. In Florida, mineral buildup from hard water often collects inside the small spray holes first. You do not need harsh chemicals or a new fixture to fix it. A careful 30-minute soak usually gets the water moving properly again.

Why it works

Minerals cling to the inside of the shower head as water evaporates. That crust narrows the openings and can make the spray uneven. White vinegar helps loosen the buildup, while a soft nylon brush removes what the soak releases. The short wait matters. Scrubbing a dry shower head usually takes more effort and can scratch the finish.

How we do it

  1. Remove the head. Unscrew it carefully and set the rubber washer aside. If the fixture is fixed in place, fill a sturdy bag with the solution and secure it around the head without forcing the connection.
  2. Brush the spray holes. Use a soft nylon brush to clear visible crust. Do not use a metal pick. It can damage the finish or enlarge the openings.
  3. Soak for 30 minutes. Use equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Keep the shower head submerged for half an hour, not overnight. A long soak is not necessary for routine buildup.
  4. Rinse completely. Flush every spray hole with clean water, wipe the threads, replace the washer and reinstall the head. Run the shower for one minute before using it.

Where it helps most

This is especially useful in bathrooms that serve guests, pool areas and homes that sit closed between visits. Florida humidity keeps bathrooms damp, while Hillsborough County hard water gives mineral crust a head start. If the spray is still weak after a proper soak, the restriction may be deeper in the fixture and worth checking before replacing it.
